Actress Barbara Parkins told a sold out mostly gay and hip crowd in 1997 at a screening at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco, "I know you like it....because its so bad!" The 1967 film from the #1 best seller by Jacqueline Susann has become a camp classic. Miss Susann wrote the book knowing full well she had cancer, and wanted to prove to herself she could write a best seller. She was the first to promote a book by making guest appearances at bookshop signings, visiting truckies at book delivery depots, and by an empowering campaign of TV interviews, mass hoopla and an amazing will power on her part. Lee Grant who played Miriam Polar describes the film as the "best and funniest worst movie ever made". This film is one of my all time favorites...for sheer exuberance, over acting, delicious script, great costumes and sets, and for repeated viewing pleasure. Time and time again, this film hits the right notes. Pure kitsch.
