I love old vintage cool album covers, even some very camp ones, because they're fun to collect, and its a lost era of design. Some LP covers become iconic for their design or illustration, others for grabbing attention for their over the top models and layout. A lot of orchestrated covers had to grab our attention in some way, so glamorous women often adorned these L.P's, or a sight gag or theme. Sex sells of course, and people bought these L.P's because they sold a lifestyle or a theme you wanted to experience. Soft music for a candlelight dinner, Esquivel or Dave Brubeck for a swinging party.

CATWOMAN Parts 1 The amazing Julie Newmar was THE Catwoman in the classic 1960's TV show Batman. The fabulous Eartha Kitt also put her own 'purrfect' stamp on the role, and Lee Meriwether camped it up in the Batman movie. All three Catwomen appear here in the last photo at a TV LAND reunion in the late 2000's. Sadly we have lost Eartha Kitt recently. I love Val Lewton's 1940's chillers, particularly The Curse of the Cat People, starring Simone Simon. She was in the original wonderful Cat People, and the sequel really is by name only, as it has nothing to do with Cat People. But there is something magical and mysterious about it, and its one of those sequels, like the sequel to Frankenstein...The Bride of Frankenstein, that has more going for it than the original. A little girl conjures up an imaginary friend that appears to her in her backyard. Its her father's dead first wife, who she never knew. A very quirky and moody classic. And it has creepy neurotic Kathleen Byron, who played the mad nun in Black Narcissus. Here she plays the despised daughter of the old woman the little girls befriends. Kathleen has a stare that could make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. In the original Cat People, she was one of the Cat People...always staring at Simone Simon in cafes, before she knew she was a Cat person also.
The last still is Lucille Ball in the sumptuous 40's Ziegfeld Follies. She whips her dancing cat women into place in this very over the top production number, after alighting from a carousel filled with beautiful women riding carousel horses.

JEFF CHANDLER: RUGGED 50's LEADING MAN

Contrary to popular belief, Jeff Chandler's so called love for wearing women's clothing, has been retracted by former wife Esther Williams. (last photo) She now admits it was made up to help sell her autobiography after her publishers insisted she steam it up. Jeff Chandler (1918-1961) was 6' 4" and was a rugged and charismatic leading man of the 1950's. As a boy he grew up knowing Susan Hayward and they later made one film together. He was good friends with Sammy Davis Jnr and Tony Curtis, even offering Sammy his eye, when Sammy lost his. He starred with Joan Crawford in one of my favorite movies, 'Female on the Beach'. By that time Joan was playing the 'older woman', as was Jane Wyman with Rock Hudson, and Joan certainly heated up the screen in this classic camp melodrama. Jeff sadly died at the age of 42, at the height of his popularity, from blood poisoning after spinal surgery for a slipped disc. His films included: 'Broken Arrow', 'Iron Man', 'Foxfire', 'The Tattered Dress'. 'Jeanne Eagels', 'Raw Wind in Eden'. 'Ten Seconds to Hell'. 'The Story of David' and 'Thunder in the Sun'.

My favorite film is THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN starring MARLENE DIETRICH. For my original artwork of THE WICKED QUEEN from Disney's SNOW WHITE. I used Marlene Dietrich's face with her famous arched eyebrows as reference. A famous line from the film is "You have ice where other's have a heart'. The Devil is a Woman, was Dietrich's favorite film. My artwork shown here is a portion of a larger painting of Miss Dietrich looking in the mirror and seeing the Wicked Queen stare back at her. It is gouache hand painted on illustration board.

Marlene Dietrich was in her mid 50's in this flashback scene from Witness for the Prosecution. Tyrone's character had met her in war torn Berlin years before during the war. This is a particularly heavy scene, and this shot was posed for theatrical stills, and Marlene took the opportunity to look half her age, and very sexy, showing off her famous legs...just one more time. Marlene at any age, managed to make herself look years younger than she actually was. She had an amazing knowledge of lighting and camera angles, as well as makeup techniques. She could virtually tell if her key light was correct by how it fell on her skin. Miss Dietrich of course had had a brilliant movie career by this time, and made fewer and fewer films preferring to sell out her shows in Las Vegas.
She got the idea for this new career from her daughter Maria who told her, just do what you did entertaining the allied troops for four long years during WW2. She did, only she did it more glamorously in specially created glittering Jean Louis gowns. Marlene famously continued to tour the world in concerts until well into her 70's. This is one of my favorite films. Tyrone Power plays Benjamin Blake, the illegitimate son of a British aristocrat, and its about his struggle to claim his birthright and family fortune. He is forced into servitude by his wicked Uncle (George Sanders) and beaten for falling in love with aristocrat (Frances Farmer). He escapes and stows away on a ship bound for the tropics. He jumps overboard and finds himself on an uncharted tropical island looking for pearls with fellow shipmate (John Carradine) He falls in love with a beautiful island girl (Gene Tireney) Years later a boat finally passes by, and he returns with his pearls in a bag, a very rich man, to claim his inheritance. I love this film because of the great cast of leading actors and great character actors. The film is very well done, and is very memorable for its storytelling. Also at the very end...I love when Benjamin finds out for himself that with all his wealth.. he was much happier on the island...and returns to the beautiful native girl Gene Tierney. Gene Tierney has the ability to make me weep openly...and this final scene...and her final scene in the Ghost and Mrs Muir do just that..... In the Ghost and Mrs Muir.... Gene as Mrs Muir had bought Gull Cottage and fallen in love with the sea Captain ghost that inhabited it. There's was a great love affair..but she was alive and he was a ghost..so it was not fulfilled. At the end of the film, after many adventures she is an old lady drinking tea. She passes away and all of a sudden the Captain is standing there with his hand reaching out to her. Her hand reaches up and clasps his, she is young and beautiful again. Arm in arm in a beautifully magical scene, he leads her out of the cottage and through the mists of time and towards the light of the afterlife. That scene always leaves me howling...I'm a romantic I suppose.

She played the role as a dizzy model who had never read a book, let alone been in a bookstore. Dovima's waspish curved eyebrows and sharp features are forever immortalized by Avedon and his elephants....She was an extreme unobtainable aristocratic beauty, like Marlene Dietrich and Snow White's Wicked Queen before her. One of the top models of all time, because she was unique.

MODERN SCREEN May 1954: Marilyn and Joe: Who turned love's dream into a free-for-all ? (excerpt) By Alice Finletter.

Marilyn was asked if she wanted to do a solo or entertain as a ten-man package show which had been performing in Okinawa, Marilyn said she's prefer being part of the troupe.

She was flown to Korea on February 16, dressed in drab combat boots, pants, and shirt (two buttons opened at the top) She carried a little make-up bag and a purple dress cut low. She described it as "a cocktail party dress or something like that. After all, I hadn't expected this. I didn't bring the right clothes,"

But the 13,000 Marines who watched Marilyn sing had no gripes at all. They swarmed all over the stage, snapping their cameras left and right. After she finished her act, Marilyn said, "I've never seen so many men in my life. I'm just sorry Joe couldn't come along but previous commitments wouldn't allow a change in the schedule."

Said one Marine officer, "You were swell, absolutely swell. We've had them all but this crowd by far outdraws the best ever." Marilyn had been flown by helicopter from Seoul to the 1st Marine Division, "and while I was scared, I tried not to show it." Before she started her act on the Korean front, Marilyn announced that she could neither sing nor dance very well, but all she had to do was breathe and she provoked tremendous cheers from the 1st Marine and 3rd and 7th Army Divisions. The 40th Division, which consists of many California regiments, really broke the record. While the troupes preliminary acts were in progress at the 40th Division theatre, 10,000 soldiers pushed and elbowed forward in an effort to get closer to the stage. When it looked as if they would break through the military police line, Marilyn was told "to be ready for anything" while the regimental commander , Colonel John Kelly, went out front and temporarily halted the show. "You're here to have a good time" he shouted. And there's no sense in anyone's getting hurt."

When the show resumed and Marilyn came out wearing the tight purple dress "that does a little for me," the crowd surged forward and thousands of soldiers attempted to climb on the backs of their buddies. In three days, Marilyn performed ten times for an estimated 50,000 men. When she finally finished at taegu, Korea, she was dead tired but happy. "You know," she told an officer, "I never felt like a movie star before-really in my heart-before I came to Korea. his is the high point of everything." "Now I'm flying back to the most important thing in my life-Joe. And I want to start a family. A family comes before a career." Back in Japan with Joe Di Maggio, Marilyn told her husband, "I'm so glad I went to Korea, Joe. I'll never, never forget that experience so long as I love." A man of few words, Joe took his wife in his arms and nodded understandingly. But he must have wondered how much longer he would have to share his bride with the world.
